The key to a tastier, more flavorful K-Cup is a slower brew, and the K-Elite’s “strong” button feature helps achieve just that, and way more. That’s why it makes the list as one of the best Keurig coffee makers. Having said that, if you’re looking for a barebones machine, the K-Slim makes the best flavor of K-Cup coffee at the lowest price, and it comes in plenty of colors including red, mint, gray, and white. The K-Slim is capable of only brewing three serving sizes––8-, 10-, and 12-ounces––and the water reservoir’s location at the rear of the machine may be slightly annoying to fill as you’ll have to pivot the machine to reach it. Its downfalls may come from its no-frills design, however. It also consumes about 139 kWh, which is slightly more than the K-Elite. Still, like all Keurigs, the K-Slim can brew a cup in less than two minutes.Īt its loudest, the K-Slim makes about 74 decibels of noise, toward the end of its brewing cycle. We also clocked the machine’s average brew time to be 1 minute and 25 seconds, though, unlike our top contenders - the K-Cafe and K-Elite - the K-Slim’s warm-up and brew cycles are combined, resulting in a longer wait. The hottest recorded cup was 181 degrees Fahrenheit, while 168 degrees was the lowest. It lacks the hot temperature required for the best tasting coffee, however, as do all Keurigs. Plus, its multistream technology ensures a richer cup of coffee by fully saturating its K-Cups, a taste we found during testing to be much like the bold feature seen on other Keurig machines.Įvery coffee we brewed using the K-Slim produced a tasty cup, providing both depth and flavor. Its slender build is the total opposite of the typical bulky design from Keurig, and maintenance is fairly lowkey thanks to the dishwasher-safe water reservoir and drip tray. If you’re looking for a baseline Keurig machine that won’t hog counter space, the K-Slim is a solid easygoing entry at only 4.7-inches wide. Its incredibly easy-to-use functionality makes it all the better. If you're in search of a Keurig that can replicate that coffeehouse feel at home, or you just want a bolder flavor of K-Cup in the morning, the K-Cafe is your go-to machine. Though it’s quite pricey, this premium Keurig is a superhero for those mornings when you want a barista experience with little time to spare. We also measured 75 decibels of noise from the K-Cafe’s brew cycle––the second loudest across all Keurigs––but its warm-up process averaged around a much quieter 65 decibels. The K-Cafe uses about 160 kWh of energy, the highest we recorded for a Keurig machine, but that’s to be expected from a machine that can both brew and froth. Those who prefer piping hot coffee may be disappointed by cooler temperatures. The hottest cup of coffee we measured from the K-Cafe was only 176 degrees Fahrenheit. All of the Keurigs we reviewed were unable to brew coffee at hot temperatures. Though we enjoyed the taste of the K-Cafe’s coffee, we found the temperatures to be a bit lacking. Numerous honors were posthumously given to Mary Mahoney, including the Mary Mahoney Medal, an award offered annually which signifies excellence in nursing. Following her speech at the first NACGN Convention at Boston in 1909, Mahoney was made a lifetime member, exempted from dues, and elected chaplain.Īdmitted to New England Hospital for care on December 7, 1925, Mahoney succumbed to breast cancer on Januat the age of eighty-one. As such, when the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN) was organized in New York in 1908, Mahoney was asked to give the welcoming address. Mary Mahoney was widely recognized within her field as a pioneer who opened the door of opportunity for many black women interested in the nursing profession. A deeply religious person, the diminutive five-foot tall, ninety-pound Mahoney devoted herself to private nursing due to the rampant discrimination against black women in public nursing at the time. Mary Mahoney may refer to: Mary Eliza Mahoney (18451926), first African American to study and work as a professionally trained nurse in the United States. Completing the rigorous 16-month program on August 1, 1879, Mahoney was among the three graduates out of the 40 students who began the program and the only African American awarded a diploma. Days not requiring ward duty involved attending day-long lectures while simultaneously devoting time to her studies. During her training, Mahoney participated in mandatory 16-hour-per-day ward duty, where she oversaw the well-being of six patients at a time. Mary Mahoney was born on in the Dorchester section of Boston. On March 3, 1878, Mary Mahoney was accepted into New England Hospital’s graduate nursing program. On AugMary Eliza Mahoney made nursing history by becoming the first African-American graduate nurse in the United States. It also assisted women in the practical study of medicine. Incorporated on March 18, 1863, New England Hospital provided its patients state-of-the-art medical care by solely female physicians. Supplementing her low income as an untrained practical nurse, Mahoney took on janitorial duties at the New England Hospital for Women and Children. The eldest of three siblings, Mahoney attended the Phillips Street School in Boston.Īt the age of 20, Mary Mahoney began working as a nurse. Originally from North Carolina, her parents were among the southern free blacks who moved north prior to the Civil War seeking a less racially discriminatory environment. To create a noise profile all one needs to do is step out of the house, point the camera at the sky, and take a frame at each ISO setting. This is also where you apply one of these noise profiles to a new image for processing. Here you can create noise profiles for specific camera and one of each combination of ISO, white balance, exposure time, etc. The second Tab is Device Noise Profileseen in Fig. If you have the Proversion you can import 16 bit images, which is preferred for highest quality noise reduction. The first, Input Image, allows you to select the file that you wish to work on. One works along, left to right, thorough each of the tabs. Along the top are 4 tabs, which can be better seen in Fig. 1 above shows the program’s primary screen. The truly compulsive can create custom noise profiles for all of these variables and each permutation and combination of them, but I’ve found that simply creating a noise profile for a camera’s major ISO settings is all that’s really needed. My experience with Neatimageshows that ISO is the most important variable. Other variables include length of exposure (particularly with long time exposures) and white balance setting. And, to be most effective it needs to know these characteristics at each different ISO setting, because increasing ISO has the greatest effect on noise. To do this it needs to know the unique fingerprintof the noise characteristics that a particular model camera produces. The way Neatimageworks is by analyzing the true noise component in an image. My feeling is that it would be somewhat more versatile if it were a plug in, but this isn’t a major obstacle. Neatimageis a stand alone program, not a Photoshop plug in. What you get for the money is such a great value that you shouldn’t hesitate. Skip the demo, because you’re definitely going to want this program, and skip the Homeversion because it won’t work on 16 bit images. The program comes in three versions - a free limited demo, A Homeversion at $29.90, and a Proversion for $59.90. Let’s look at what it is and what it does. Neatimageis in my experience the most effective and comprehensive program available for reducing and even eliminating noise in either scanned or digital original images. There are programs available that can help us though, but none that I’ve yet seen can hold a candle to Neatimage. Nikon and Fuji DSLRs have very good to excellent performance in terms of noise, up to about ISO 400.īut while we rely on manufactures to provide us with better and better in-camera noise reduction capability there are still instances when we have to shoot at very high ISOs, or the camera that we’re using has inherent limitations in this regard. On the other hand, among other contemporary cameras the Kodak DCS 14nhas very disappointing noise characteristics at medium to high ISOs. From ISO 100 to 400 is essentially noise free and even ISO 8 are quite usable. The new (Spring 2003) EOS 10Dis simply amazing in this regard. Canon, for example, has found ways to produce low noise images at high ISOs in their CMOS-based DSRLs that are quite remarkable. Some manufacturers have excelled in this area. With the advent of digital cameras the struggle changed to reducing noise, and as each successive generation of digital camera has come along we have seen improvements. Kodak and Fuji struggled to give us fine grain along with high speed, though the two were for the most part inimical. When we were shooting film, grain was the enemy.
